Did Johnston Win State Baseball Title?

The Dragons thrashed the top-seeded Des Moines East team Friday in the state baseball tournament semifinals to face Sioux City East in Saturday's championship.


The Johnston Dragons downed Sioux City East 9-3 Saturday night at Principal Park in Des Moines, reported fans at the game.

On Friday night the Dragons beat top-seeded Des Moines East High School 5-3 to earn the spot in the championship game, according to the Waterloo Courier.

Alex McCune drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and fourth-seeded Johnston held off top-seeded Des Moines East in the Class 4A state baseball semifinals.

Des Moines East took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and protected until the top of the sixth when Johnston rallied for four runs on three hits, two walks and an error to take the lead, the Courier said.

Travis Brenner walked with the bases loaded to score the first run before McCune hammered a two-run single. Nick Stitzell added another run-scoring single to give the Dragons (28-12) a 4-2 lead.
