Live Updates From Johnston Polling Sites; Lines Form as People Leave Work

The polls are open until 8 tonight in the Johnston school district as voters decide whether to build a new high school and renovate several other buildings.

Patch reporter Stephanie Ivankovich has been out all day visiting polling sites in the Johnston school district for today's special election.

Here are her updates from late this afternoon:

At Crowne Pointe 343 people have voted as of 5:35 p.m. Scott Everhart, helping with the voting, said it has been a strong turnout.

"There seems to be a strong interest in this issue," Everhart said.

The line to vote at Johnston's City Hall is out the door with 673 votes so far. (at 5:15 pm.)

Voting numbers increase at the Johnston Public Library with 309 votes and counting.

The votes continue to pour in Johnston Evangelical Free Church, with 740 votes.

Carl Lock who helps the voters said they have been busy all day. "It's been steady and good all day," Lock said at 4:15 p.m.

Johnston City Hall met the expected turnout with 277 voters so far. Larry Haines is helping the voters. "The turnout has been pretty steady," Haines said.

At Johnston's Public Library, 136 people had voted on the $41 million school bond before noon. Linda Pendergraft brought her grandchildren when she voted.

"I voted for the proposal because I do think we need a new high school and other facilities," Pendergraft said.

At Johnston's Evangelical Free Church 334 people had voted before the lunch hour. Marlin Darr, a poll supervisor, was busy at the table. "It's a good turnout, as we expected," Darr said.

At Gloria Dei Church in Urbandale, 41 people had cast ballots at about 10:30 a.m. Linda Biegger, who is helping at the polls, said, "It's good to see numbers coming out of this."
