Johnston Student Makes Physics Fun With Monthly Class for Kids

The words “fun” and “physics” are not often associated together. But Johnston High School senior Vaibhav Srikaran aims to change all that through his Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student project, “Phun with Physics.”

“Phun with Physics” is Srikaran’s monthly class at the Johnston Library, aimed at breaking down basic concepts in physics, such as flight, buoyancy, towers and bridges, and simple machines for children in grades three through five. Srikaran said a hands-on approach to STEM education (science-technology-engineering-mathematics) concepts can make learning (more) enjoyable for students.

“Each time we meet, we cover a physics-related topic by making something and testing it out,” Srikaran said. “Kids seem to like to use their hands and make something while they’re learning. The projects I’ve chosen are fun, engaging, and get students interested in the science behind what’s happening.”

Srikaran originated his idea after thinking of his own experience with the Iowa Technology Student Association (TSA). Through different projects, Srikaran honed problem-solving skills and developed an aptitude for advanced science. As STEM education becomes increasingly important in curriculum, Srikaran saw the “Phun with Physics” class as a way to combine problem solving and STEM-related studies.

When he presented his idea to the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student committee, it was met with much enthusiasm.

“They see this class series as serving a real purpose for students,” Srikaran said. “Part of the application and interview process is explaining to the committee how you are using your skills to help others in the community.”
