Johnston Man in Jail on Charge of Attempted Murder

Police say the man assaulted a female relative. The suspect remains in the Polk County Jail on $80,000 bond.

A Johnston man is in the Polk County Jail on a charge of attempted murder after reportedly assaulting a female relative while she was in bed, the Des Moines Register reports.

Steven Charles Perry, 44, remains in the jail today, according to the Polk County Jail website.

Officers were called to the 5800 block of Northglenn Drive Saturday at 10:15 p.m. Monday when a woman called authorities to say Perry had assaulted her, the Register said.

Perry reportedly hit the woman in the stomach and head and tried to strangled her, said Johnston Police Lt. Lynn Aswegan. When police arrived, the bedroom was in disarray and the woman had severe injuries, which included bruising consistent with strangulation, Aswegan told the newspaper.

Perry told police a lamp fell on the 65-year-old woman.

Perry was charged with domestic abuse assault, attempted murder, assault and first-degree harassment. His bond for all four charges is $80,000.
