'Happy, but Sad': Horizon Elementary Parents Help Kindergarten Students Start School

Goodbyes were exchanged and parents of about 120 kindergarten students at Horizon Elementary filed into class to start their first day of school on Aug. 15.

"Welcome to Horizon, it's going to be a good day!"

Shannon Carlson, assistant principal of Horizon, greeted about 120 Horizon Elementary kindergarten students and their parents as they filed into their classrooms to begin their first day of class Thursday.

Amy Dippold and her husband took her son to his first class.

"I don't know what I'm going to do with my extra time," Dippold said.

Angela Kern walked her son, who is her fourth child, to the classroom doors with tears in her eyes.

"It's hard because he is my baby," Kern said. "But he is excited about his new backpack."

Nicki Sullivan and her husband also walked their daughter, Shay, to class.

"I feel mixed," Sullivan said. "Happy, but sad. She is excited."

Carlson said today was a great start to the school year.

"The teachers are organized and the staff is prepared," Carlson said. "They are all settled in before 9, this is a great start of the day."

Carlson said the teachers met the families and kids before the first day of school.

There are five kindergarten classes at Horizon.
