Johnston's Simpson Barn Jams on Sunday

Brenda Smith hosts an old-style jam session for local musicians at the Simpson Barn.

Brenda Smith has been playing guitar and singing since she was 5 years old.

As part of the Corder Family Bluegrass Band, Smith has performed at the Iowa State Fair, Downtown Farmers' Market, Silver Dollar City and several smaller town celebrations.

For the past four years, Smith has hosted an acoustic style jam session at the Simpson Barn in Johnston.

The event is a way for all musicians to share their love of music and visit with or make new friends.

The family friendly event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23. Smith tries to host the event each month.

Goodwill donations of $5 for all participants are requested to offset the cost to rent the barn.

"This is an event that is open to the public, so people can come in and listen if they don't want to join in the jam session," Smith said. "It's very uplifting and fun!"
