Cooper said the excitement for the event has already been astounding.

"It wasn't hard to tell people it was on," she said. "Last year was a learning curve because we hadn't done anything like this. People are looking forward to it."

This year, organizers looped in the city's youngest artists for a currently being showcased at the Johnston Library.

"We thought that was a good way to bring kids in," Cooper said. "It's primarily an adult event, but this was a way to tie the two together."

Cooper sent fliers home to students in Johnston elementary schools and Summit Middle School asking them to create a piece that reflected their take on this year's Homecoming theme "Fire and Ice."

Kids Art in the Barn will remain on display until Sept. 15.

Last year, the event raised more than $3,500 for the Johnston Public Library. The money was used to purchase a computer for the children's section of the library.

Tickets to the event are still available for $20 at the library and Hy-Vee.
