House District 39: What Social Issues Take Priority in GOP Primary?

The primary election for House District 39 is set for Tuesday.

Social issues drive most campaigns and that's no different when it comes to local elections.

Today, Johnston Patch brings a little insight into House District 39 candidates' views on the issues.

Incumbent Erik Helland, 32, faces challenger Jake Highfill, 22 in Tuesday's Republican primary election.

Highfill told Johnston Patch he is against judicial overreach and activism within the Iowa Supreme Court. Highfill supports "removing those that legislate from the bench."

"I believe citizens have the right to have a say in the laws of their state and I would support giving them an opportunity to vote on same sex marriage," he said.

Highfill told The Des Moines Register that abortion was one of his top three priority issues.

"I will champion legislation to protect the life of the unborn," he told The Register.

Helland, who did not return a questionnaire to Patch, describes himself as a "pro-life, pro-family" man on his website.
